Press Peonage

Pity the American journalist
Trapped inside the system.
He might get urges to write the truth
But he knows he must resist 'em.

There in the newsroom he sees too well
The obstacles that face him.
Should he succumb to his principles
They could easily replace him.

Though much that we see in our leadership
Is thoroughly reprehensible,
Our scribbling serfs will stick to their trade
Defending the indefensible.
